Student life at Flatiron School

By joining the Cybersecurity Engineering program, you’ll become part of our thriving tech community in downtown D.C., just steps from the National Mall.

Our full-time D.C. Cybersecurity Engineering program is in session 5 days per week for 15 weeks and follows a block schedule. We use a unique instructional architecture to maximize instructor interaction and lab exercises. Designated lab times let you engage in hands-on learning, while key cybersecurity topics are covered during classes. Most classes will occur twice a week. Each class is a half-day in length with a lunch break between subjects.

Throughout the program, you’ll progress through longer “foundational” courses while tackling shorter, domain-specific topics.

Gary is an interim instructor and the chief cybersecurity curriculum designer for Flatiron School. He primarily teaches systems, cryptography, logs and analysis.

Do I have to have experience (what do I need to know) before I apply for Flatiron School’s Cybersecurity Engineering program?

In reviewing your background, we will be looking for applicants with an interest in programming and computer networks. Detail-oriented problem solvers with a programming background are a good fit for this program.

What is cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity is the protection of computer systems from theft or damage to their hardware, software, or electronic data. Our students are taught to be “ethical” hackers. They protect organizations against “threat actors” or bad hackers.

Will this program help me get a cybersecurity industry certification?

At Flatiron School, you can learn the foundational skills for cybersecurity certifications. While certification exam prep is not built into our curriculum, by completing our Cybersecurity Engineering program you will gain the solid grounding that you need to successfully complete most cybersecurity industry certs.

Where can I attend Flatiron School's Cybersecurity Engineering program?

Students can attend the Cybersecurity Engineering program at our Washington, D.C. campus, located at 1140 G St NW.

What is the schedule like?

Students are on campus for 15 weeks, Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Our New York City campus is open 24/7 to students, and we often find them working hard at all hours to finish coursework and projects. Students do find it extremely difficult to have any other commitments during their studies, such as a part-time job.

Do I need my own computer?
